Topic : In the future, there will be a higher proportion of older people than young people in many countries. Is it a positive or negative development?
In recent years, studies have pointed out that the old population is growing gradually in percentage, indicating that the scenario in which the elderly makes up the majority is getting more likely to happen in the foreseeable future. To my mind, this appears to be a negative trend and betokens some considerable problems for humankind as a whole.
On top of all, the greatest threat that may be posed by the growing number of elderly is the declination in economy developing speed. In the contemporary era, human resources play an indispensable role in kickstarting the growth of most industries. Therefore in the future when most current youngsters would have been aged, the demands for labour in fields which are labor-intensive and strength are prerequisite would not be met, resulting in the reduction of the rate at which the world evolves. For instance, the industry of natural resouces exploitation has been long known to be mainly dependent on human; therefore, the lack of labour if occurs will lead to many unpredictable consequences since the industry provides materials for many other ones.
Moreover, another reason is that in the final stages of life, humans become completely reliant on their surrounding people. Although they no longer make money, it would take quite an amount to sustain their life, namely costs for food, medical healthcare, leisure activities and so on. Consequently, when the number of the elderly increases and the opposite goes for that of youngsters, those expenses will probably be considered a great concern.
For the encapsulation, in light of all the aforementioned evidence, it is obvious that the growth in the population age is liable to have negative and detrimental impacts on our future. To sidestep some unwanted consequences, strategies are needed to be implemented with the purpose of preventing the change from coming about.
