The diagram illustrates the phases to produce sugar from sugar cane plant.
Overall, the production of sugar involves seven stage process, that begins with growing the sugar cane in farms and culminates in drying and cooling the syrup to form sugar.
In the first step, the sugar canes are grown in farmland for about a year to 18 months and then the mature plant is harvested either manually or with the help of agricultural machinery. After that, the sugar cane stalks are crushed in a grinder, resulting into the formation of sugar cane juice.
In the next step, the juice is purified by going through a limestone filter. Subsequently, the juice is heated in an evaporator and by vaporization of water it becomes a syrup. The syrup is then poured into a centrifuge where it separates sugar crystals from syrup. Finally, the sugar is produced by drying and cooling the crystals.

Examier’s Review:
The topic is very well addressed and the position is clear throughout. Main ideas are presented and well supported, apart from some over-generalisation in the penultimate paragraph. The ideas and information are very well organised and paragraphing is used appropriately throughout. The answer can be read with ease due to the sophisticated handling of cohesive devices – only the lack of an appropriate introduction mars this aspect of the response. The writer uses a wide and very natural range of vocabulary with full flexibility. There are many examples of appropriate modification, collocation and precise vocabulary choice. Syntax is equally varied and sophisticated. There are only occasional errors in an otherwise very accurate answer. Overall this performance is a good example of Band 8.
