The table below shows the number of students living in the UK gaining English language teacher training qualifications in 2007/8 and 2008/9, and the proportion of male qualifiers.

The report presents data on the number of students in the United Kingdom who gained English Language Teaching qualifications in the academic years 2007/08 and 2008/09, with particular focus on male qualifiers.

Overall, total student numbers remained stable across the two years, but male qualifiers were significantly outnumbered by females, and their proportion declined slightly.

In 2007/08, of the 32,930 qualifiers, only 24.7% were male. The following year, although the total rose marginally to 32,945, the proportion of males fell to 22.7%, representing a 2% decrease.

The majority of students obtained a TEFL certificate, a trend consistent among both genders. TEFL qualifiers outnumbered those with a Cambridge UCLES CELTA or other degrees by approximately three to one. However, total TEFL qualifiers fell from 25,446 in 2007/08 to 24,917 in 2008/09, with male qualifiers for this certificate declining by 0.7%.

In summary, female dominance in English Language Teaching qualifications is clear, and the share of male qualifiers is gradually decreasing.
