IELTS Reading Practice: Matching Headings

Paragraph A

One important idea in economics is supply and demand. This means that the price of something is decided by how much of it is available and how many people want to buy it. For example, if many people want a new phone but there are not many phones available, the price will probably be high. On the other hand, if there are too many phones and not many buyers, the price will go down.

Paragraph B

Cognitive dissonance is a theory in social psychology which describes the mental discomfort people feel when they hold two conflicting beliefs, or when their actions do not align with their beliefs. To reduce this unpleasant feeling, individuals often change their attitudes or justify their behaviour, seeking consistency in their thoughts and actions.

Paragraph C

Climate change is a big problem for our planet. It is mainly caused by human activities like burning coal, oil, and gas. These activities release greenhouse gases into the air. These gases trap heat from the sun, which makes the Earth’s temperature rise. This can lead to more extreme weather, like stronger storms and hotter summers.

Paragraph D

The Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the late 18th century, marked a major turning point in history. This transformation was facilitated by new inventions, such as the steam engine, which radically changed production methods, transportation, and daily life.
