Grammar 101: Its vs. It’s

When you’re in a hurry, you might write “it’s” when you really mean “its,” or the other way around. You need to be aware of this mistake and know when to use which.

It’s is a contraction of “it is” or “it has.” Its is a possessive determiner we use to say that something belongs to or refers to something.

Incorrect: He doesn’t think its a good idea to spend all his money on video games.

Correct: He doesn’t think it’s a good idea to spend all his money on video games.

Incorrect: Its been a year since the last time they met.

Correct: It’s been a year since the last time they met.

Incorrect: The computer looked as though it’s power supply had failed.

Correct: The computer looked as though its power supply had failed.

Incorrect: A car is no good without it’s wheels.

Correct: A car is no good without its wheels.
