Understanding IELTS (Foundation)

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most widely recognized English proficiency examination. It is trusted by universities, governments, immigration authorities, and employers across the globe to assess a candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in English.

Each year, over 4 million candidates take the IELTS test to support their academic, professional, or migration goals. Whether you plan to study abroad, build an international career, or immigrate to an English-speaking country, IELTS serves as a globally accepted benchmark of English language ability.

What Is IELTS?

IELTS evaluates a candidate’s English proficiency across four essential language skills:

  • Listening

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Speaking

The test is designed to reflect real-life English usage in academic, professional, and social environments.

IELTS Test Types

IELTS offers two versions depending on your objectives:

  • IELTS Academic
Designed for students applying to universities or professional institutions in English-speaking countries.

  • IELTS General Training
Intended for individuals seeking employment, migration, or non-academic training opportunities.

Both versions assess the same core skills and follow the same scoring system.

Who Owns and Manages IELTS?

IELTS is jointly owned and administered by three globally recognized organizations:

  • Cambridge Assessment English
A department of the University of Cambridge responsible for test design, research, and academic integrity.

  • British Council
A UK-based organization that delivers IELTS testing in many countries worldwide.

  • IDP Education (Australia)
An international education organization responsible for administering IELTS in Australia and other regions.

Regardless of whether you take the test through the British Council or IDP, the test format, difficulty level, scoring, and certificate are exactly the same.
