Understanding IELTS (Foundation)

When preparing for IELTS, it’s not enough to just practice English, you need to understand how your performance translates into a score.

This lesson will guide you step by step through the IELTS scoring system, including how to calculate your overall band, what each band means, and how it compares to international standards.

1. Understanding the Band System

IELTS uses a band scale from 0 to 9. Each section, Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking,Β is scored individually.

  • 0: Did not attempt

  • 1-3: Extremely limited English

  • 4-5: Limited / modest competence

  • 6: Competent user

  • 7-8: Good to very good

  • 9: Expert user

πŸ’‘ Tip: Each band reflects your English ability in practical situations, not just test knowledge.

2. Calculating Your Overall Band Score

The overall band score is the average of your four sections, rounded to the nearest half or whole band.

Example Calculation:

Section Score
Listening 7.5
Reading 6.5
Writing 6.0
Speaking 7.0

Step 1: Add all section scores
7.5 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 7.0 = 27

Step 2: Divide by 4
27 Γ· 4 = 6.75

Step 3: Round to nearest half or whole band
6.75 β†’ 7.0 Overall Band Score βœ…

This is your final IELTS score.

3. Understanding Raw Scores vs Band Scores

Listening & Reading

  • Each correct answer earns 1 point (raw score).

  • There are 40 questions per section.

  • Raw scores are converted to band scores according to a conversion table.

Example: Listening Raw Score β†’ Band Score

Correct Answers Band
39-40 9.0
30-32 7.0
16-17 5.0

Example: Reading Raw Score β†’ Band Score

Correct Answers Band
39-40 9.0
30-32 7.0
15-18 5.0

πŸ’‘ Tip: Conversion tables differ slightly between Academic and General Training Reading.

Writing & Speaking

  • There are no β€œcorrect” answers.

  • Examiners grade using four criteria:

  1. Task Achievement / Response

  2. Coherence and Cohesion

  3. Lexical Resource (Vocabulary)

  4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Scores for each criterion are averaged to produce the section band score.

4. IELTS and CEFR Comparison

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is a global standard for language proficiency.

CEFR Level IELTS Band Description Use Case
C2 9 Expert, native-like fluency Professional registration, postgraduate study at top universities
C1 7.5–8.5 Effective operational proficiency Most universities, skilled migration visas
B2 5.5–7.0 Independent user Undergraduate programs, work visas
B1 4.5–5.0 Threshold / intermediate Vocational courses, working holiday visas

πŸ’‘ Tip: Universities usually require a minimum of 6.0 overall for undergraduate admission.
