Key Facts About IELTS Formats

1

Computer-based IELTS was introduced in 2001, but didn’t become widely available globally until 2017 when the format expanded to more test centers.

2

Typing speed matters for CBT – test takers who can type at least 30 words per minute tend to perform better in the Writing section of computer-based IELTS.

3

PBT offers more annotation freedom – many test takers find it easier to underline and make notes on reading passages when using paper.

4

CBT has a word counter – unlike PBT, the computer version shows you exactly how many words you’ve written during the Writing test.

5

Headphones are provided for CBT Listening – the computer test offers better audio quality with adjustable volume controls.
