In Short Answer Questions, you are asked specific, factual questions about details in the passage. Your task is to write short answers using words taken directly from the text. You will be given a strict word limit (e.g., ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBERNO MORE THAN THREE WORDS).

The Core Challenge:
This task directly tests your ability to scan for specific information and locate precise facts. You must:

  1. Understand exactly what the question is asking for (e.g., a person, a place, a number, a reason).
  2. Find the specific sentence in the passage that contains the answer.
  3. Identify and copy the correct word(s) that directly answer the question.

Crucial Distinction from Other Tasks:

  • vs. Sentence/Summary Completion: While all involve retrieving words from the text, Short Answer Questions are framed as direct questions rather than incomplete sentences. The mental process is very similar, but the format is different.
  • vs. Multiple Choice: There are no options to guide you. You must find the answer independently within the text.

7-Step Strategy for Short Answer Questions

Step 1: Read the Instructions Meticulously
This is your first and most important step. You must check the word limit. If you exceed it, your answer will be marked incorrect.

Step 2: Analyze the Questions
Read each question carefully. Your goal is to identify:

  • The Question Word: What is it asking for? (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How many, How long?)
  • Keywords: Underline the key content words in the question that you will use to scan the passage.

Step 3: Predict the Type of Answer
Based on the question word and context, predict what the answer will be.

  • Who: A person or group.
  • Where: A place or location.
  • When: A time, date, or period.
  • Why: A reason or cause (often a noun phrase, not a full sentence).
  • What/Which: A thing, idea, or name.
  • How many/long: A number or a duration.

Step 4: Locate the Relevant Area in the Text
Scan the passage for the keywords you identified from the question. The questions will follow the order of the text.

Step 5: Read the Text Intensively
Once you find the area, read the relevant sentences carefully. Your goal is to find the specific piece of information that answers the question.

Step 6: Select the Correct Word(s)
When you find the answer, ensure it:

  • Directly answers the question.
  • Is written in the exact form as it appears in the passage.
  • Does not exceed the word limit.

Step 7: Finalize Your Answer and Move On
Write your answer clearly. Do not add extra articles (a, an, the) if they are not part of the original text and are not necessary. If you are stuck, use your prediction to help you search again, then move on.

IELTS Reading Practice: Short Answer Questions

Passage: The Invention of the Printing Press

The development of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg around 1440 in Mainz, Germany, is widely considered one of the most pivotal inventions in human history. Prior to this, books were painstakingly copied by hand, almost always by scribes in monasteries. This made books exceedingly rare and expensive, confining knowledge largely to the clergy and the very wealthy.

Gutenberg’s key innovation was not the press itself, but the use of movable metal type. This involved individual letters and characters cast in metal that could be rearranged and reused for different pages, dramatically speeding up the printing process. His most famous work, the Gutenberg Bible, was printed in the 1450s and is renowned for its high quality and aesthetic beauty.

The impact of the printing press was revolutionary and swift. It led to a massive increase in the production and circulation of books. This, in turn, facilitated the spread of new ideas during the Renaissance, the Scientific Revolution, and the Protestant Reformation. For the first time, knowledge could be disseminated quickly, accurately, and relatively cheaply to a much wider audience, fundamentally reshaping European society.

Questions:
Answer the questions below.
Choose NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER from the passage for each answer.

  1. In which German city did Gutenberg develop the printing press?
  2. Before the printing press, who was primarily responsible for copying books?
  3. What kind of type was central to Gutenberg’s innovation?
  4. What is the name of Gutenberg’s most celebrated publication?
  5. In which decade was the Gutenberg Bible printed?

Step-by-Step Demonstration Table

StepActionWhat to DoDemonstration with Question 1
1.Read Instructions✅ Understand the TaskInstructions say: NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER. I must adhere to this limit.
2.Analyze the Question🔎 Identify Keywords & Question WordQuestion 1: “In which German city did Gutenberg develop the printing press?”
Question Word: Which (expecting a place).
Keywords: German city, Gutenberg, develop.
3.Predict the Answer💭 Guess the FormThe answer will be the name of a single city.
4.Locate in Text📄 Find the SectionScanning for “Gutenberg” and “German” leads to the first sentence of the first paragraph.
5.Read Intensively👀 Find the MeaningText: “…Johannes Gutenberg around 1440 in Mainz, Germany…”
6.Select Word(s)✅ Check Grammar & LimitThe city name is “Mainz.” It is one word and fits the word limit. It directly answers “which German city.”
7.Finalize & Move➡️ Maintain FlowAnswer 1: Mainz. Now move to Question 2.

Let’s demonstrate a question that requires careful reading for a specific noun phrase.

Question 3: What kind of type was central to Gutenberg’s innovation?

  • Step 2: Question Word: What kind. Keywords: type, central, Gutenberg’s innovation.
  • Step 3: The answer will be an adjective describing “type.”
  • Step 4/5: The relevant section is the second paragraph: “Gutenberg’s key innovation was… the use of movable metal type.”
  • Step 6: The phrase that describes the “kind of type” is movable metal. However, the question asks for the “kind of type,” and the full noun phrase is “movable metal type.” To fit the word limit and answer precisely, we need the descriptive words. “Movable metal” is two words and correctly specifies the kind. “Metal” alone would be insufficient, as the movability was the key.

Analysis: You must provide the specific words that answer the question within the limit. Sometimes this means taking a key phrase from a longer description.

Now, try to complete the rest. The answers are below.

  1. Mainz (Paragraph 1: “Johannes Gutenberg around 1440 in Mainz, Germany”)
