Task Achievement is one of the four key criteria (along with Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy) used to assess your IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 (Letter Writing). It evaluates how effectively you fulfill the requirements of the task.
Key Aspects of Task Achievement in Letter Writing:
- Addressing All Parts of the Prompt
- The IELTS letter task will have three bullet points that you must cover.
- You should respond to each point clearly and sufficiently. Missing any part will lower your score.
- Appropriate Tone & Purpose
- The letter must match the formality (formal, semi-formal, or informal) required by the situation.
- Example:
- Formal (e.g., complaint to a company) → “Dear Sir/Madam,”
- Semi-formal (e.g., letter to a landlord) → “Dear Mr. Smith,”
- Informal (e.g., letter to a friend) → “Hi John,”
- Clear & Relevant Content
- Avoid irrelevant details. Stay focused on the task.
- Provide necessary explanations or reasons where needed.
- Correct Word Count (Minimum 150 Words)
- Writing less than 150 words will result in a penalty.
- However, excessively long letters (e.g., 200+ words) may include unnecessary information.
