General Writing Course: Task 1

Task Achievement is one of the four key criteria (along with Coherence & CohesionLexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy) used to assess your IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 (Letter Writing). It evaluates how effectively you fulfill the requirements of the task.

Key Aspects of Task Achievement in Letter Writing:

  1. Addressing All Parts of the Prompt
    • The IELTS letter task will have three bullet points that you must cover.
    • You should respond to each point clearly and sufficiently. Missing any part will lower your score.
  2. Appropriate Tone & Purpose
    • The letter must match the formality (formal, semi-formal, or informal) required by the situation.
    • Example:
      • Formal (e.g., complaint to a company) → “Dear Sir/Madam,”
      • Semi-formal (e.g., letter to a landlord) → “Dear Mr. Smith,”
      • Informal (e.g., letter to a friend) → “Hi John,”
  3. Clear & Relevant Content
    • Avoid irrelevant details. Stay focused on the task.
    • Provide necessary explanations or reasons where needed.
  4. Correct Word Count (Minimum 150 Words)
    • Writing less than 150 words will result in a penalty.
    • However, excessively long letters (e.g., 200+ words) may include unnecessary information.
