You have been invited by your colleague to his farewell party. You are not able to attend the party, write a letter to the friend
– explain the situation,
– say why you are not attending,
– say something about the period you have worked together and his/her work.

Dear Sanjiv,

I received the news of your well-deserved promotion with a mix of pride and sadness — pride because you have truly earned this achievement through your dedication and hard work, and sadness because it also means you will be leaving us. I am genuinely honoured by your invitation to the farewell party, but regretfully, I must inform you that I will be unable to attend due to a prior commitment.

Coincidentally, my cousin’s wedding falls on the same day, and as a close family member, I am deeply involved in the preparations and cannot excuse myself from the occasion. Were it any other engagement, I would have gladly rescheduled it to join you on your special evening.

I will always cherish the time we worked together, during which I learned from your meticulous planning, calm leadership, and unwavering support. You have been more than a colleague — a true mentor and friend. I wish you continued success and happiness, and I will certainly keep in touch by phone and email.

Yours sincerely,
Rajesh
